Abstract
The confinement of acoustic phonons in nanostructures leads to particular eigenmodes, that can be probed in spectroscopic experiments in order to characterize their elastic and structural properties. Here we review how this approach can be used to probe plasmonic and semiconducting nano-materials down to the single nano-object level.
