The rapid development during the last two decades in the fundamental study of structural coloration in the biological or artistic world, and its application in biomimetics is such that it becomes increasingly desirable to transmit the knowledge and methodologies, which have emerged and developed for these fields, to newcomers and primarily, young PhD students. There
is a growing need to instruct students from physics, chemistry, biology, modelling…with a strong interest for interdisciplinary collaboration, to help them enter these new fields which are expected to rapidly grow further in the immediate future.
The school will cover fundamental problems and questions around color (Basic optics, scattering and interferences, physics of color, surface plasmon, nanosciences, color in art work, color in living objects : butterflies, beetles, schells, cephalopodes…), and the various spectroscopic techniques (Electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and small angle scattering, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy).
Practical courses (Numerical simulations, portable instruments) for small groups will be given: Colorimetry, optical absorption, diffraction, Raman, EXAFS, fluorescence, Microspectroscopy).
