Elastic Instability under Confinement

When a rigid flat object or a flexible plate is removed from a thin soft film, instability patterns appear at the interface in the form of bubbles or fingers. The wavelength of the instability is mainly determined by the thickness of the soft film. They do not depend on the material properties of the films except when co-operative instability is involved. In contrast to the wavelength of the instability, its amplitude is strongly dependent on various material and geometric properties of the system. A critical confinement parameter can be defined on the basis of the various material and geometric properties below which no instability develops. We will discuss the roles of these instabilities in the context of pattern formation, adhesion and friction of thin confined films.
