In a short series of lectures (2h+2h), we aim at giving a conceptual introduction to Plasmonics where we try to avoid unnecessary details. To this end, we first introduce the fundamentals of plasmonics and thereafter present some selected applications. No previous knowledge of plasmonics is required to follow the course as our starting point will be the Maxwells equations and some basic solid state physics. The first part of the course is devoted to introduce the so-called surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and localized surface plasmons as well as a discussion of how such modes can be excited. In the second part, some selected examples of plasmonics will be presented and discussed. These physical phenomena will be explained in terms of the concepts introduced in the first part.
