Resonant scattering of polarized soft X-rays : probing structural and magnetic properties of solids

New developments in storage rings and linear free-electron lasers widen considerably the range of application of X-ray scattering techniques. In particular, improvements in polarization tuneability, degree of coherence and selectable time structure provide new methods for investigating the electronic and magnetic properties of solids. The soft X-ray range is particularly suited for studying magneto-optical effects and magnetic structures in arrays of sub-micron sized objects, either artificially built or self-assembled.

I will present results of recent resonant soft X-ray scattering experiments, with applications to the study of thin fims, multilayers and arrays, encompassing recent applications of coherent scattering for X-ray holographic imaging.
