Transport of Fast Ions through Solid and Clusters under Intense Laser Pulses : Interaction dynamics probeb by X-ray spectroscopy.

How does the matter behave under a strong perturbation induced either by fast highly charged ions (HCIs) or intense and short laser pulses ? Two types of interactions have been studied : fast HCIs colliding with thin amorphous carbon foils and nanometer-sized rare gas clusters submitted to strong optical fields. HCIs induce a local polarization of the solid described as a wake of electronic density fluctuation trailing the ion, the so-called wake field that may mix the ion excited states by Stark effect. Large clusters, similarly to solids, couple very efficiently to intense sub-picosecond laser pulses leading to the production of HCIs with inner shell vacancies that de-excite by emitting keV photons. The study of the X-ray emission in both cases provides information on the electronic response of the perturbed matter. The experimental and theoretical aspects will be presented.
