Ultrathin oxide films become interesting materials in modern technological applications. In addition, thin films are considered as suitable models to elucidate the atomic structure and mechanism of chemical reactions at oxide surfaces and oxide/metal interfaces. The talk addresses general aspects of the fabrication of ultrathin films and discusses some structure-reactivity relationships observed on these films. Several case studies will be discussed in more details such as (i) ZnO and FeO films in CO oxidation ; (ii) interaction of water with metal supported silicate films.
